Side Effects of Yoga

We all are well aware of benefits of yoga. But here I am talking about the side effects caused by Yoga. Actually whether yoga causes any bad effects on our body or not it’s a topic of debate. Some purely believes that Yoga has no side effects. According to them when we start yoga practices our body can have certain disabilities while eliminating the waste/ morbid products out of the body. They call these as Healing Crisis. According to them these effects diminishes gradually after some time.
However many people mention certain bad effects while practicing yoga. Most of these effects are seen in the initial phase when the individual has just started the yoga practices. Where some effects got corrected with the advancing time others got worsen. So here we need to be bit careful while starting the yoga practices.
First of all always start doing yoga under the supervision of a person who has mastered in it. If you are suffering from certain health problems like blood pressure instability, asthma, cancers etc. always consult your doctors before. They are there to help you. So take full advantage from them. Moreover in certain health problems if you start doing yoga without consulting your physician in stead of being benefited from it your condition may get worsen.
For example in case of psychotic disorders like schizophrenia certain caution is indicated while doing any kind of exercises.
Here my special mention is about the pregnant ladies. Yoga is considered very well during pregnancy but do it in the supervision of some good teacher. Never try it yourself; it can become harmful to you instead.
One thing you also need take care is about your dieting habits. Never do yoga when your stomach is full. You will feel discomfort. There should be a gap of 4- 6 hrs in between. Don’t drink too much water while doing yoga exercises. Never drink or eat immediately after the yoga session, have a break in between. Also take care of the food you are taking.
Gastric disturbances are very common side effects associated with yoga. Some persons may feel flatulence, changes in stool content, passing out of more gases, feeling acidic while practicing yoga etc. In yoga experts’ view these symptoms will occur in the initial stage of the exercises and will diminish with time and moreover these are good signs for your digestion process. Like when you are passing out more gases or your stool content is increased that means your gastric system was problematic and now the yoga exercises are fixing the problems. Feeling acidic while doing Yoga means that yoga has activated your digestion process and so the food which was not being digested before is now in the digesting phase while doing the exercises. We all are well aware that while food digestion with in the body the food is mixed with gastric juices which are acidic in nature.
In the initial phase of yogic exercises one may feel muscle cramps which is due to accumulation of lactic acid as the fats got converted to lactic acid. And with time these effects will be corrected. It occurs in all kind of physical exercises. However if the pain is sharp that means that you may have ruptured some tissue and need to see some physician. So the beginners should start with easy forms and then gradually shift to difficult ones and that too in the supervision of some yoga teacher. Moreover gradually increase the time limit of your exercises.
So we all can enjoy the healing effects of yoga but we need to use certain precautions while practicing the yoga practices.

Hello, I am 25 years old and I started doing yoga 3 months ago, with the same teacher that my mother(54 years-old) did for 2 years, once a week. This year however, she had a very tiring summer and she started yoga at december because my sister got married in November, so all the family, including myself were very busy. Having stopped exercizing from May, she was in pain the first times. At a certain point she started feeling her waist in great pain. She went to a physician, had X-rays/MRI, the result:4 spondyls moved (disc hernia/rupture, pardon me for mistakes,I am not familiar with medical terms in English)Howener, the strange factor is that I also have noticed some pain in my waist, not in the same degree of course, but in the same spot!! Also, all my joints hurt (shoulder joints, my ankles, my wrists...and others) and I had cramps almost everyday. I got easily tired and had cramps in various spots of my body when I walked for more than an hour (I used to like walking a lot!!)The teacher told me that it would be possible to have elastic/strechy joints-which is bad. To be honest,my wrists were always weak...I thought, he is right, and I asked him, what do I do then? You never stop exercizing your body and continue doing yoga. Yoga brings out all the pains of our body...in order to heal them of course..Now I am very angry at him, because my mother had this damage that really never gets better...As for me, the strange thing is that during the yogic poses, I never felt that I am pushing my body beyond its capabilities..The muscle stain was almost nothing to me but all the strain want straight to my joints after the classes..so I think I cannot control my body in yoga. Generally speaking, I always took some kind of exercize in my life, but the moment I started yoga, my body had been out of practice for a very long time..so I think that factor made it even harder for me..And now, I decided never to take yoga lessons again, but pilates that I felt was better for me. I hope that my waist pain stops soon,I may visit an osteopathologist for that..But what if the 'hidden' pains of our bodies are so great, that they cause something severe, what happens then? For us for example it would be wiser to rest for a few months and start working out very gradually. Who decides for that?Who is responsible? In our cases we were unlucky in a way..out of exercise for a while, extremely tiring months before yoga..I think I will not last, I am desperate..I live with my mother(father past away-sister not close) who is always in pain..and in the past she had delt with very difficult health problems, for a long time..And now we have to start all over again, searching for the right doctor, expenses, complaints,God! Again! And I started feeling panic because I NEVER had waist problems myself...ok I lift weights sometimes, but somebody has to go shopping right? Anyway,I am sorry for the long message, I just wanted to share my experience...I hope things will get better....

i read ur whole msg.i am really sorry for what happened to you and your mother. what i feel about your condition is that there was something wrong in the learning procedure of your excercises. was the teacher who was teaching you certified. nowadays many people have entered in this field to lure money, they know nothing but still they run such kind of workshops whether it is yoga classes or gyms. for their personnel benefits they play with others health, so we need to be cautious while enrolling with such things. in ur case i will suggest you only one thing that be in touch with good physician and take proper rest. i wish you and your mother a fast recovery.

Hi i have recently been through quite a tough breakup in my relationship of 13 years, which i have been trying to deal with the best way i could, and decided to go go a yoga class in order to get out of the house and find some relaxation.
my concern is that i found the class amazing and so relaxing - i havent felt so relaxed in ages,
but the day after my first session i feel really weak, dizzy, sluggish and very strange could this be my tension releasing or is this not a side affect of yoga?

hi, i read about ur experience after your first yoga session....such kind of things can occur when you start something new not only in case of yoga but other physical excercises too. let your body adapt to the new changes. be patient, soon you will be fine. one more thing that you can do is, try to communicate with the other members in the class who are attending the class for long. ask about their experiences too. in this way you can get better idea about all this. but if the symptoms continue for long or if they get worsen up, immediately stop practising yoga and consult some good physician. my best wishes are with you. soon you will be out of all your trobles.

I have practiced yoga for 12 years and for 12 years had back ache. (I am one of these peopel with grace and flexibility of a yoga model that cause many beginers to shy away from practice). At the end of this summer (2009) my low back pain became intolerable and I had to seek help.

My primary care physician refered me to physical therapy. After about 5 sessions of special lower back strength training, manual therapy, ice and electric stimulation therapy as well as careful analysis of my exercise routine and stopping yoga--I was pain free.

My physical therapist and MD (who is also a biomedical engineer) said that sun salutations are really bad and unnatural moves that yogis subject themselves. Those unnatural bends were the cause of my back pain.

Now, 3 months without yoga and I feel better than ever--pain free, morning stiffness free and still flexible and energetic. I think, American society has this passing fads--aerobics in the 80s, weight-lifting in the 90s and now yoga...

The point is that moderation in everything is the key...

Hi, i read about your friend's condition. In my opinion it is not due to yoga, may be she is developing some kind of ailment. So i'll suggest you to tell your friend to undergo a complete checkup; blood tests, hormonal investigations etc. and also consult a good physician, i hope your friend will be better soon.....

hey..um 22 years old,, i desperately wanted to know if there is any chance of gainig weight or getting fat if i try yoga for a couple of months and then stop practising yoga.

Hi! it's good that you want to join yoga for weight loss. yoga not only relaxes you bt also it lands you in a proper shape. bt to get proper effects you need to do it regularly. if u'll discontinue it after some time then you may again gain weight. it happens because you will have the same amt of calorie intake but calorie usage will be lessened up. this will happen not only with yoga bt with other physical exercises too.....so my sincere advice to you is to do it regularly, then slowly-2 u'll feel the difference. and do it under the guidance of some experienced instructor...

I will say that the person instructing in Yoga told me to stop if it did hurt. Evidently though, she also said that the pain is often caused due to not being used to it. Evidently, that makes for a very bad experience.

I will also say that yoga is just ugly.

Hi...
I am 24 years old and recently started doing yoga on my own without supervision. I am only doing simple exercises, but I am experiencing the gastric problems which you have mentioned. However I also feel some pain in my stomach. Is this ok or should I stop doing yoga immediately?
